GREENSBORO — Taylor Thompson has been making beads out of polymer clay for a year.

Thompson sold 100 of them for $25 at a flea furnish, and it only cost her $5 to make them, she said.

Now, she’s ready to carry her craft in a different market: UNCG’s first student-run market, Spartan Trader.

“My friends talked me into coming down here,” said Thompson, a lesser entrepreneurship major, on Tuesday after she signed a contract to sell her beads in the cache. “I give them to friends ... and they seem to like them.”

The Spartan Retailer opens next month on Spring Garden Street. It will sell handcrafted wares by UNCG’s students, dispensation and staff, and the store is open to the public for shopping.

But it will be the students — many of them studying in the university’s entrepreneurship and consumer, rags and retail studies programs — who will operate the consignment boutique. They’ll learn not only what it takes to open a business but to sustain it.
